The United Nations declared 1989 to be World Population Day. The significance of the world's population surpassing about five billion on July 11, 1987, served as the impetus for the creation of this unique occasion. Dr. K.C. Zachariah suggested a celebration of this day. World Population Day was founded to address concerns related to the world's population, including poverty, maternal health, economic hardships, and many other difficulties.
