EVERY YEAR, March 27 is celebrated as ‘World Theatre Day’ across the world. This special day celebrates and acknowledges artists across the globe. The day stands to educate people about the importance of theatre and how it teaches society about various concerns. Theatre is one of the most prominent ways to exhibit art, culture and tradition around the globe. Theatres, by exhibiting shows, help in raising awareness regarding the persistent social evils and problems.
World Theatre Day 2023: History
World Theatre Day was first observed by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), which has continued to do so ever since. The ITI introduced World Theatre Day in 1961, and it has since been celebrated on March 27 every year by the international theatre community and ITI Centres. A variety of national and international theatre events mark this day.
The first message was composed by Jean Cocteau in 1962, and every year on March 27 (the opening date of the 1962 'Theater of Nations' season in Paris), ITI Centres and various Theatre-related organisations, including theatres, theatre professionals, and universities, commemorate this day in diverse ways. This message called the International Message is translated into over 50 languages and shared with people all over the world.
