World Vegetarian Day 2024: History

World Vegetarian Day originated in 1977 founded by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS). The idea emerged from a 1976 NAVS convention in Oglethorpe, Georgia where participants sought to create a unified day for vegetarians to promote their lifestyle. NAVS President Taylor Caldwell proposed the concept and October 1 was chosen to align with the founding of the Vegetarian Society in England (1847). Since then, World Vegetarian Day has grown into a global movement, celebrated annually with events, workshops and campaigns advocating for animal welfare, environmental sustainability and human health through plant-based living.
