Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, recently shared that he has instructed authorities not to issue challans to vehicle owners travelling at speeds of up to 120 km/h on expressways. He also added that motorists exceeding the 120 km/h speed by up to 20 per cent should also be left off.
Why Nitin Gadkari Doesn’t Want Challans?
Nitin Gadkari was speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event and shared that he aims to reduce unnecessary notices for drivers on expressways. The Union Minister said that “Some people are receiving notices on the road due to speed. I have instructed that no notices should be sent for speeds up to 120 kmph. And even above 120, if someone exceeds it by 20%, let them go. If someone goes beyond this, issue a challan.”

What Does This Mean?
The 20 per cent margin mentioned by Nitin Gadkari would mean no challan for speeds up to 144 km/h. However, the Union Minister’s remarks have been made in the context of expressway enforcement, and speed limits have not been revised formally. The Union Minister has specifically mentioned expressways, such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, where speed limits range between 100 and 120 km/h.

The Union Minister has also urged industry support for the successful rollout of an AI-based Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) that will support authorities in detecting discipline violations and strengthening enforcement across Indian highways.
