Bihar Budget 2026: Presenting the budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Nitish government signalled its intention to accelerate the pace of development in the state. Bihar Finance Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav presented a budget of Rs 3,47,589 crore in the House. This budget is significantly bigger than the Rs 3.17 lakh crore budget of the current financial year 2025-26. While presenting the budget, Yadav said that the government's clear objective is to bring Bihar into the category of developed states in the country.

On the second day of the Budget Session, the proceedings of the assembly resumed after being adjourned until 2 PM. The state finance minister then arrived at the assembly carrying a red bag and delivered his budget speech. During his speech, he praised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's leadership, stating that Bihar has charted a new course of development in recent years.

Here Are The Key Highlights Of The Budget

  • Affordable Houses: The budget gives significant importance to the affordable housing scheme for urban and rural areas. The government believes that the availability of affordable housing will provide great relief to the lower and middle classes. This will not only improve people's living standards but also strengthen the construction sector and create new employment opportunities.
  • 5 New Expressways: The budget places special emphasis on connecting the state with a better road network. The government has announced the construction of 5 new expressways. This will facilitate traffic, reduce travel time, and promote industrial investment. Calling expressways the backbone of development, the Finance Minister said that they will accelerate Bihar's economic activities.
  • Development Model Based on Five Elements: In his budget speech, Yadav linked Bihar's development model to five elements. He said that the state's plans are being prepared on the basis of knowledge, integrity, science, aspirations, and respect. The government's priority is to move forward by combining education, technology, innovation, and social justice.
  • Focus on Industry And Employment: The budget outlines plans to increase farmers' income and promote modern farming through the fourth agricultural roadmap. It also includes schemes for developing infrastructure for industries, encouraging startups, and empowering local markets. The government claims that these efforts will create local employment opportunities for young people.
  • Social Welfare Schemes: In keeping with the state government's motto of "nyay ke saath vikas" (development with justice), a sum of Rs 7,724 crore has been allocated for social welfare schemes.
  • Women Empowerment: Yadav also spoke of the much-talked-about Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana, rolled out ahead of the assembly polls in November last year, which is said to have decisively clinched the deal in favour of the ruling NDA. "A sum of Rs 10,000 each was transferred into the accounts of 1.56 crore women. Soon, an additional Rs 2 lakh will be given to those who may have utilised the money to set up businesses," said the minister.
