The electricity department is planning an extensive underground cabling scheme for Patna, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur. A detailed proposal is currently being prepared at the headquarters of the power company and will be submitted to the state cabinet for approval. Tenders for the project will be invited only after cabinet clearance is obtained.

According to officials, covered electric wires will be installed in areas where underground cabling is not possible due to proposed road construction or technical constraints. These covered wires do not pose a risk of electric shock. Such wiring has already been implemented in several parts of Patna.

Underground cabling work was carried out in Patna earlier, covering the stretch from the Income Tax roundabout via R Block and the Airport crossing to the Raj Bhavan area. However, the work could be completed only on one side of the road.

In the upcoming phase, underground cabling will be carried out on the remaining side. Officials said that the required equipment has already been procured, and work is expected to begin soon from the Dak Bungalow area, particularly on the section of Nehru Path where the work could not be completed earlier.

Meanwhile, a large-scale underground cabling project, estimated to cost around Rs 500 crore, is being finalised at the headquarters level. Under this scheme, complete underground cabling is proposed for Patna and selected areas of Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur.

The respective power divisions in Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur will determine priority areas for implementation. The proposal will be sent to the state cabinet for approval, following which the process of selecting an executing agency will begin. The plan is to commence work under this scheme next year.
