More than 25 houses are set to be removed for the construction of the approach road to the Chandwara bridge, Muzaffarpur, prompting concern among residents who have been living in the area for three to four decades. The homes range from makeshift shanties to permanent structures.

The Mushahari Circle Office has issued notices to all affected families. The first notice allows 15 days for vacating the premises, expiring on December 24. If residents fail to comply, a second notice will be issued, followed by administrative action to clear the area. The administration has assured that all displaced persons will be rehabilitated, and a search for a suitable site is underway.

Mushahari Circle Officer Mahendra Prasad Shukla stated that the approach road is being built under Chandwara Phase Two, and the presence of over 25 families along the route could obstruct construction and delay completion. The District Magistrate recently inspected the site and directed that work commence promptly.

The affected population comprises more than 200 people living in the 25 homes. Among them, elderly residents like Sadhusharan and others said they have been residing there for about 40 years and earn their livelihood through manual labour. They appealed to the administration to consider their plight before removal.

The 2.90-kilometre-long approach road, being constructed from Jail Chowk to Sipahpur, will provide direct connectivity from the eastern part of the city to the Darbhanga National Highway (NH), fulfilling the purpose of the Chandwara bridge project. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 190 crore. Land acquisition has begun, and following public hearings, the land-related documents of landholders (raiyats) are under review.
