In a historic decision by the Nitish Kumar-led government, 855 officers of the Bihar Secretariat Service have been promoted. The General Administration Department issued a notification in this regard on Saturday, which has come into immediate effect.

Breakdown Of Promotions

According to the notification, the promotions span various ranks within the Bihar Secretariat Service:

- 31 Deputy Secretaries promoted to Joint Secretary.

- 79 Under Secretaries promoted to Deputy Secretary.

- 226 Section Officers promoted to Under Secretary.

- 519 Assistant Section Officers promoted to Section Officer.

Background And Association’s Role

The government’s decision follows a sustained initiative by the Bihar Secretariat Service Association. A delegation from the association had met Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on several occasions to press for these promotions, receiving assurances from him.

Previously, promotion opportunities within the service were limited. However, following the association's demands, the Chief Minister took a positive stance, leading to an increase in the number of sanctioned posts in October 2025. This structural change paved the way for Saturday's mass promotion order.
