The Varanasi–Patna–Siliguri High-Speed Rail corridor, announced in the Union Budget 2026, is being hailed as a major connectivity project for Bihar. While it may be premature to say this bullet train will transform Bihar's landscape overnight, it will undoubtedly provide a new direction for development in several districts. Specifically, Buxar, Bhojpur and Patna are set to benefit directly from this corridor.

Entry Into Bihar Via Buxar

According to the final survey, the high-speed rail will enter Bihar through Buxar. It will then pass through Bhojpur, Patna, Begusarai, Katihar and Kishanganj before reaching Siliguri in West Bengal. Potential stations in Buxar, Udwantnagar, Patna, Katihar and Kishanganj will significantly strengthen the national connectivity of these regions.

Historic Reduction In Travel Time

Currently, the journey from Varanasi to Siliguri takes an average of 15 to 17 hours. Once the bullet train is operational, this same distance can be covered in approximately 4 hours. Furthermore, travel from Patna to Varanasi and onward to Delhi will become much easier and faster. This will ensure seamless access for the people of Bihar to the national capital and North-East India.

Elevated Tracks To Minimise Impact

The entire high-speed rail corridor will be elevated, constructed at a height of 12 to 15 meters above the ground. This design will ensure minimal impact on road traffic and local movement. In the Bhojpur district, the bullet train will cover a length of about 50 kilometers, passing through 38 villages, for which approximately 96 hectares of land have been acquired.

Boosting Employment And Investment

The construction and operation of the bullet train project will create new employment opportunities in Bihar. There is a strong possibility of increased investment in sectors such as real estate, hotels, tourism, and logistics around the stations. Patna and its surrounding areas are expected to reap the maximum benefits.

However, the bullet train will not change Bihar’s destiny overnight; the project will demonstrate its impact over the long term. Growth will accelerate gradually through improved connectivity, industrial activities and investment. Ultimately, the Varanasi–Siliguri bullet train will certainly lay the tracks for new hope in Bihar, upon which the train of progress will run in the future.
