S Krishnan, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), stated on Thursday that Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses the most significant threat to office jobs. Speaking at FICCI's 'AI India' conference, Krishnan explained that since AI is now directly challenging tasks related to critical thinking and analysis, white-collar employees working in offices are at the highest risk.
Which Segments Are Most At Risk?
The Secretary observed, "If you look at previous industrial revolutions, the changes they brought were mostly related to automating manual labor performed by humans. For the first time, AI is actually replacing cognitive tasks. Therefore, those engaged in work involving thinking or analysis face the greatest threat from AI."
Despite the risk of displacement, Krishnan emphasised AI's significant potential to boost productivity, particularly in developing economies like India. He argued that the potential to generate new employment opportunities through skill development far outweighs the current job losses.
"Greater Opportunities For New Types Of Jobs"
The Secretary stated, "For many companies, the immediate temptation might be to focus on early successes and ignore long-term future challenges. However, as a government, we are concerned about both aspects of this issue. It is not that we are unconcerned about the impact on jobs, but we believe that the opportunities for creating new types of jobs in new sectors are far greater. This will be possible primarily through skill development, upskilling, and talent development."
He further added, "This is a task that is common to us all. It is not solely the government's job, nor is it just the industry's responsibility. This process will involve multiple stakeholders."
