New Labour Codes News: As a working professional, you might be wondering if the new labour codes that were introduced earlier for the welfare of employees across all levels, then you should be happy to know that the labour codes are now fully operational.
Speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the central government has fully operationalised the four new labour codes. He emphasised that labour and Industry should complement each other and adapt to change for effective coordination.
The four new labour codes consolidated 29 labour laws into a simplified and contemporary framework.
Labour Codes Become Operational Earlier This Month
After a wait of over five years, earlier this month, the central government issued regulations for the full implementation of four labour codes. The four codes are the Wages Code 2019, the Industrial Relations Code 2020, the Social Security Code 2020, and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020, which will come into effect from November 21.
Mandaviya said that the labour reforms are aimed at ending "inspector raj" and providing a single registration and single window for the industry, adding, "Labour inspectors are now being made facilitators and are being given ample scope to ensure compliance with the law".
Highlighting that employment is as important as industry in the country, the Union Minister for Labour, Employment, Youth Affairs and Sports said, "Our government is pro-poor and pro-farmer and pro-industry."
He said the new legal framework provides equal pay for equal work for men and women, and that jobs will only be created when entrepreneurs create wealth and pay taxes.
Benefits Of New Labour Codes
On May 9, the central government issued regulations that fully implement the four labour codes to ensure minimum wages and universal social security for all workers.
The implementation of the codes will be the next step in the transformation -- broadening labour protections, easing business operations, and promoting a labour-friendly work environment.
Employment letters: The labour code provisions include mandatory employment letters, free health check-ups for workers aged 40 and above, and equal work, pay, and opportunities for women working in different shifts.
Weekly working hours: The regulations set the weekly working hours at 48 hours and provide workers with at least one day off or rest day, and overtime pay for work done outside working hours.
Minister Urges Curtailing Use Of Petroleum Products
The minister called for a reduction in the consumption of petroleum products and gold purchases in the wake of the West Asian crisis.

Earlier last week, on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for the prudent use of fuel, suspension of gold purchases and foreign travel among other measures to boost the economy.
Addressing a rally in Hyderabad, he suggested reducing petrol and diesel consumption, using metro rail services in cities, increasing carpooling and using electric vehicles (EVs) and rail services for parcel movement.
