Central government employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting an official announcement for the revision of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for the second half of 2026. Meanwhile,  the pending adjustment came into focus ahead of the Union Cabinet's upcoming meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Following unusual delays in the DA approval for the July-December cycle, expectations are running high that the government will announce it amid the festive season.

Projected DA Increase and Economic Basis

Central government employees currently enjoy a DA at an existing rate of 60 per cent. The allowance rate is being calculated on the basis of average retail inflation metrics logged over the preceding 12-month period via the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW).

Based on annual macroeconomic indicators, analysts anticipate a 3 per cent raise, elevating the total DA threshold from 60 per cent to 63 per cent. The definitive percentage remains subject to final ratification by the Union Cabinet.

Employee Union Expect DA Hike

Employee associations have voiced mounting concern over the extended timeline. Dr Manjeet Singh Patel, National President of the All India NPS Employees Federation,  said that the announcement is overdue for months, expressing confidence that cabinet approval will be granted during the next meeting.

Echoing these sentiments, C. Srikumar, General Secretary of the All India Defence Employees Federation, indicated that a formal declaration appears imminent following the meeting.

Union Demands Approval Of DA/DR

Earlier, the delay in the DA hike announcement triggered demonstrations across various government facilities on October 16, organised by the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW).

Additionally, various employees' union representatives urged the immediate release of DA, DR, and festival bonuses in a formal communication addressed to the Cabinet Secretary.

Earlier, the administration recently cleared Performance-Linked Bonuses (PLB) for railway staff; expectations are high for the announcement of a DA hike.

The delay in the DA hike has an impact on employees' take-home salary. For instance, a Level-7 officer earning a basic salary of Rs 44,900 currently draws a gross pay of approximately Rs 71,840 under the 60 per cent DA structure. A 3 per cent increment to 63 per cent would raise the monthly total to Rs 73,187, translating to a net gain of Rs 1,347 per month.
