The hallmarking charge for gold articles has become dearer by 67 per cent per article, rising to Rs 75 from Rs 45, as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS )'s recent revision of hallmarking charges for gold and silver. The changes came into effect from September 14–the day BIS officially notified the Gazette, introducing new charges.
Additionally, as per BIS Hallmarking Regulations, 2026, jewellers submitting gold articles to recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) will have to pay a minimum charge of Rs 200 per consignment along with Rs a hallmarking fee of Rs 75 per article.
For silver articles, the fee is fixed at Rs 35 per article, with a minimum of Rs 150 per consignment.
Rs 7.5 BIS Fee To Be There
In addition to the ‘Hallmarking Charge’ and minimum consignment charge, the notification specified that AHCs will levy a fee of Rs 7.50 per gold article on behalf of the BIS. The BIS charge is subject to a minimum of Rs 20 per consignment. For silver articles, it is Rs 3.50 per article, with a minimum charge of Rs 15 per consignment.
All other applicable taxes, including GST and CGST, will be charged separately. Gold attracts GST on inter-state or intra-state purchases.
How Will New Hallmarking Charge Impact Buyers?
- The minimum charge per consignment means jewellers submitting gold for hallmarking will have to pay an additional Rs 200 along with Rs 75 for hallmarking each article. If the consignment has fewer articles, then it could impact the cost of making for jewellers.
- This will impact the end consumer as well, as the final bill contains making charges and other costs.
- Let’s assume a customer submitted two pieces of gold for hallmarking; then he has to pay Rs 150 as hallmarking charge and an additional Rs 200 as assignment charge. Other charges like the BIS fee will be applicable as well.
- Therefore, the revision in rates adds another factor for jewellers to account for as they prepare inventory–especially in the wedding season of the upcoming festive season.
Silver Hallmarking Fee Unchanged
The revised guidelines do not hike the hallmarking fee for silver articles. Rs 35 per silver article will continue, meaning the end consumer bill will not increase at all due to hallmarking charges.
