US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) said on Friday that it will invest $400 million in India in the next five years to expand research development and engineering operations. The chipmaker plans to build a new campus in Bangalore with the largest R&D facility in the world.
With this investment, the chipmaker company is expected to create the largest AMD centre, adding around 3,000 engineering roles. The opening of the Bangalore campus would be before the ending of 2023, the company said at SemiconIndia 2023 in Gujarat.

“The planned investment will include a new India campus, which will serve as AMDs largest R&D facility in the world. Our investment will build out over two decades of growth and successful presence here in India. Today, I can tell you that we expect to add approximately 3000 additional engineers here in India by the end of 2028," said Mark Papermaster, EVP and CTO, AMD.
Papermaster further added, “We have a diversified portfolio across CPU Server Data Center, GPU gaming graphics, PC, adaptive computing and embedded devices and this investment will allow us to expand our portfolio and capabilities as we bring AI processing capabilities broadly across AMD products. Our India team will be pivotal in advancing AI and machine learning in both hardware and software capabilities.”
The new 500,000-square-foot (55,555 square yards) campus will increase the company’s footprint in India to 10 locations, which has more than 6,500 employees.
The chips manufactured by the California-based company are widely used from personal computers to data centers. It is also working on an artificial intelligence chip that will take on market leader Nvidia Corp, reportedly.
AMD has been part of India’s semiconductor ecosystem since 2001 when the company built its first site in New Delhi.
