Big Bash League: Pakistan's star batter Babar Azam has parted ways with the Sydney Sixers, ending his disappointing Big Bash League (BBL) stint ahead of a crucial qualifier as he is expected to join senior national team as it prepares for the T20 World Cup.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recalled Babar to join national team practices for upcoming international commitments, including a T20 series against Australia and the T20 World Cup 2026.
In a brief statement, Babar thanked the franchise, his teammates, and fans for their support.
“I have very much enjoyed my time. Unfortunately, I will now have to leave the team to go on national duty. I have a lot of things I have to take back home – a lot of fun, a lot of positive things, so I have enjoyed it a lot," Babar said.
“Especially, thank you to the Sydney Sixers fans; there is always support there, lot of support, lot of encourage(ment), a lot of fun, so I have very enjoyed that vibe at Sydney Cricket Ground, so thank you so much," he added.
“The level of fan engagement generated by Babar’s passionate supporters has been exceptional, highlighted by the Babaristan stand at the SCG, which has been a memorable feature of our home matches this season," Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes said.
Babar's labours were evident in BBL, scoring 202 runs at an average of 22.44 and a strike rate of 103.06 in 11 matches, initiating criticism from former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh, who suggested dropping him from the team.
“Unfortunately, I’m going to have to drop Babar Azam. I know he’s world-class, but at the top of the order, he hasn’t delivered consistently enough. When you’re thinking about winning this tournament, you need your openers firing, and so far, he just hasn’t done it," Waugh said earlier this week.
