India will only have a third successive Test series win in Australia in mind as soon as they reach there for the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Rohit Sharma-led side is low on confidence ahead of the all-important assignment, having recently suffered a 0-3 Test series defeat against New Zealand at home.

This was India's first-ever Test series defeat at home after 12 years.

An interesting update has emerged as India look for a massive challenge in Australia, Gautam Gambhir's biggest assignment as the head coach so far.

The Indian team could have separate coaches for Test and white-ball formats in the future if the Rohit Sharma-led side loses badly in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran on Saturday (November 9), BCCI could think about appointing separate coaches for both white and red ball formats.

Currently, Gambhir is India's head coach in all three formats, having taken over the role from Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Even after a few concerning results, BCCI isn't thinking of removing him after such a short span but an option has emerged to have separate coaches for the red and white-ball format of the game.

As per reports, NCA head VVS Laxman, who currently is in South Africa with the second-string Indian team as head coach for the four-match T20I series, could get the charge of the Test side, and Gambhir will continue to work with the white-ball teams.

The Indian team has never had different coaches but it seems that BCCI is taking over the massive step considering the need of the hour amid the transition phase within the setup.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah, President Roger Binny, Captain Rohit Sharma, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, and Head Coach Gambhir participated in a review meeting on Friday after India’s shocking defeat in the home series against New Zealand.

In the six-hour-long meeting, Gambhir’s coaching style was discussed as well as team management’s decision to opt for rank-turner in the Pune and Mumbai Tests.

It has been reported that some of the members of India’s think tank were not on the same page with Gambhir in terms of India’s team selection for the five-match series against Australia.

India and Australia will face off in a five-match Test series which begins on November 22 with the opening match in Perth. India have won their last two Test series in Australia.
