Bangladesh have booked their place in the women’s cricket semi-finals at the Asian Games after their quarter-final against China was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Thursday.

Heavy rain at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin forced the match to be called off. The wet weather had already affected proceedings at the venue throughout the week, and Thursday’s washout brought China’s campaign to an early end.

Under Rule 16.10.2(b) of the Asian Games cricket Playing Conditions, the higher-ranked team progresses if a match is washed out. As a result, Nigar Sultana-led Bangladesh advanced to the last four.

What does the result mean for China?

China were making their third appearance in the Asian Games cricket competition since 2010. However, their campaign ended without the opportunity to play their quarter-final against Bangladesh.

The Chinese men’s team is not part of the eight-team cricket competition at the ongoing Games.

Who could Bangladesh face in the semi-finals?

Bangladesh are now likely to meet India in the women’s semi-finals. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team will face hosts Japan in their quarter-final at Kōrogi Sports Park on Friday.

The other women’s quarter-final on Thursday will see Pakistan take on Thailand at the same venue.

Both semi-finals are scheduled for Sunday, September 20, while the gold medal match will be played on Tuesday, September 22.

When will India face Japan in men’s cricket?

The Indian men’s team will take on Japan in their first bilateral T20I at the Sano International Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Shreyas Iyer will captain India, while Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming will lead Japan. The venue is located around 100 kilometres from Tokyo.

The match is part of celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in July, both countries announced that 2027 would be observed as the ‘India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons’ to commemorate the milestone.
