Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20 captain reportedly largely depends on head coach Gautam Gambhir, as the national selection committee is reportedly not fully convinced about his place in the team purely as a batter, according to a senior BCCI source.

The T20 World Cup 2026 winning batter Suryakumar Yadav is currently going through a lean patch of his career and the news agency PTI reported that their sources within the BCCI say that most selectors are now leaning towards moving on from him. However, the board also understands the importance of a strong coach-captain relationship inside the dressing room.

Because Gambhir shares a close understanding with Suryakumar, his opinion is expected to play a major role in the final decision.
For nearly a year, Suryakumar’s place in the playing XI has been under constant discussion. At present, it is believed that all five selectors feel the current T20 captain should be dropped from the side.
What Indian selectors and thinking about captaincy
This thinking reportedly became stronger after the excitement of India’s T20 World Cup win had settled down. The selectors are now said to be looking at the long-term future of Indian cricket rather than judging players only on one successful tournament.
"Initially the selectors thought that IPL would help Suryakumar regain form like last edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely there hasn't been any technical course correction in his game.
"Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths and he has no answer. Selectors don't see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that," a senior BCCI source told PTI.
His recent numbers have added to the concerns. Suryakumar scored only 210 runs in 12 innings, with a strike rate of 148. More worrying for the selectors is that his average has fallen below 18, which is a sharp dip for a batter once seen as one of the most dangerous players in T20 cricket.
"If someone can't earn his place as a batter, how can he be a leader? Hence it is difficult to retain him but Ajit (Agarkar) and Gautam need to be on same page," the source said.
That is where things become interesting. People familiar with Gambhir’s style say he is not the kind of coach who stays in the background. In most teams he works with, his views carry major weight. His bond with Suryakumar has also remained very strong over the years.
Because of that, if Gambhir decides to continue backing Suryakumar and opposes the move to remove him, the selectors may have to delay any final decision on his future as captain.
