All-rounder Axar Patel played a huge role in India's thrilling six-run win against Australia in the fifth T20I at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. Defending a mediocre target of 161, Axar remained economical in his four-over spell and also picked Tim David's (17) wicket to break the key partnership.

With the win in the final match, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side clinched the series 4-1 and outclassed the ODI champions on home soil. However, most of the title-winning players did not feature in all matches of the series.

Axar returned with the figures of 1-16 after playing a knock of 31 runs off 21 balls studded with a six and two fours. Revealing about the adjustments he made during his spell, Axar said he stuck to his stump-to-stump line to dismiss the dew factor in the game.

"I was trying a lot of things when I was at home and it came out well today. I tried to stick to my strengths and wasn't really bothered even I had gotten hit and bowling stump-to-stump was the key to negate the dew factor," Axar said in the post-match presentation.

"To stay attacking and be mentally strong is important as there is every chance to get hit in this format. When you go with an attitude to pick wickets, will feel much better," he added.

Axar missed the ODI World Cup due to a left quadriceps strain and returned only for the T20I series against Australia post the quadrennial event.

During his recovery at home and National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, the all-rounder tried different variation in his bowling that yielded results for him in the series.

"During the (injury) break I focussed on improving myself and add new variations to my bowling to remain successful at the highest level," Axar said.

Batting first, Shreyas Iyer's 37-ball 53 including two sixes and five fours guided India to respectable 160 despite losing wickets at regular intervals. In response, Mukesh Kumar bagged three wickets while Arshdeeo Singh and Ravi Bishnoi clinched two scalps each to restrict Australia to 154-8 in 20 overs.
