Australian spinner Adam Zampa capped off his impressive performance in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 by equaling Muttiah Muralitharan's record of the most wickets by a spinner in a single edition of the tournament. Zampa achieved this feat in the final against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Muralitharan set the record in 2007, taking 23 wickets from 10 matches with an economy rate of 4.14. In the 2023 edition, Zampa finished with 23 wickets from 11 matches at an economy rate of 5.36. He secured the wicket of Jasprit Bumrah in the final to equal Muralitharan's record. Following Zampa, Brad Hogg (2007) and Shahid Afridi (2011) share the second spot with 21 wickets each.
Zampa's outstanding performances included three four-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. Additionally, he recorded two three-wicket hauls against New Zealand and England. Despite a challenging day against South Africa, Zampa made a significant impact in the final by equaling the legendary spinner's record.
In another achievement, Zampa became the first overseas bowler to claim 50 wickets in ODIs on Indian soil. He reached this milestone in 27 matches. With 165 wickets in 96 ODIs, including 11 four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul, Zampa has established himself as a potent force in limited-overs cricket.
