In a remarkable display of skill and determination, 24-year-old left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh etched his name in the annals of Indian cricket history by achieving a feat that had eluded all other Indian pacers on South African soil. Arshdeep became the first Indian pacer to claim a five-wicket haul against the Proteas in their own backyard.
Despite being wicketless in his previous three ODIs, Arshdeep showcased his prowess in the crucial match, not only securing his maiden ODI wicket but going on to register a five-wicket haul against the formidable South African batting lineup.
Arshdeep's stellar performance, yielding figures of 5 for 37, played a pivotal role in India's dominance as they bowled out the hosts for a meager 116 runs in just 27.3 overs in Johannesburg. Avesh Khan also made a significant contribution with four wickets for 27 runs.

By achieving this milestone, Arshdeep joined an exclusive group of bowlers who have managed to secure a five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODIs. Notably, he became the second Indian bowler to accomplish this feat on South African soil after Yuzvendra Chahal.
The first bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODIs was spinner Sunil Joshi, who accomplished the feat in 1999 with figures of 5/6. Subsequently, Chahal (5/22) in 2018 at Centurion and Ravindra Jadeja (5/33) in 2023 at Kolkata added two more instances of Indian bowlers achieving this milestone.
Reflecting on his historic achievement, Arshdeep expressed his happiness, acknowledging the pressure he felt, especially considering his previous wicketless outings in ODIs.
"I was under a bit of pressure because I never took any wicket in ODIs before. Happy to get a fifth," Arshdeep told the official broadcasters in the mid innings break.
