India will not play Shubman Gill in their ongoing practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo. Gill injured his right ring finger during a training session on Thursday, just a day before the three-day warm-up match began.
As a precaution, Gill did not take the field on Day 1 after Sri Lanka Cricket XI chose to bat first. KL Rahul is leading India in the match in Gill’s absence.

According to a report by timesofindia.com, Gill is also unlikely to bat in the warm-up game as India do not want to take any risks with his injury. However, the team management is confident that he will be fit for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, which begins on August 15. The second Test is scheduled to start on August 23.
Reports suggest that Gill was hit twice during India’s training session on Thursday. He was struck once while batting and then again while fielding.
With concerns over his fitness, the BCCI announced on Friday that Gill would miss the first day of the warm-up match.
The Test series against Sri Lanka will be India’s first series of the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India last played a home Test series against South Africa in November last year.
Gill had also suffered a neck injury while batting in the second Test against South Africa. That injury kept him out of action for nearly a month.
Despite that setback, Gill has been in excellent form in the current WTC cycle. He has scored 950 runs in eight matches, making him India’s highest run-scorer in the 2025-27 WTC cycle. He has also scored five centuries and one half-century.
The upcoming Test series is important for India as they look to improve their position in the WTC standings. India are currently fifth in the table.
