India once again skipped the Asia Cup trophy presentation after winning the Women’s Asia Cup for a record eighth time with a victory over Sri Lanka in the final.

The Indian team did not attend the presentation ceremony at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was on stage to hand over the trophy.

Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was present during the ceremony and handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu. The Sri Lankan players also collected their runners-up medals.

However, the Indian players stayed away from the ceremony. Soon after Athapaththu spoke to Farvez Maharoof, the presentation came to an end, with Naqvi then leaving the ground.

Why did India refuse to take the trophy from Naqvi?

India had already made its position clear before the presentation. The team did not want to receive the trophy from Naqvi because of the strained relations between India and Pakistan.

India had made a similar stand during the men’s Asia Cup final in September 2025. After beating Pakistan in the final, the Indian team waited for more than an hour to receive the trophy and medals.

The team had requested that the trophy be handed over by the vice-chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board instead of Naqvi. However, Naqvi did not agree to the request and maintained that the Indian captain would have to collect the trophy from him.

What happened during the 2025 men’s Asia Cup?

The situation then turned chaotic. As the Indian team waited to go on stage, an ACC official was seen taking the trophy away from the ground.

India eventually left without receiving the trophy, while the standoff with the ACC continued. Naqvi remained firm that the Indian captain would have to collect the trophy directly from him.

The latest incident in Dubai marks the second time India have skipped an Asia Cup trophy presentation involving Naqvi.
