England openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell etched their names into the record books with a stunning partnership in the third ODI against India at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19.
The pair put together 192 runs for the opening wicket, which is now England’s highest-ever partnership against India in ODIs. They went past the previous record of 186 not out, set by Eoin Morgan and Joe Root at Leeds in 2018.
Their stand also created history at Lord’s. Duckett and Bethell became the first opening pair to score more than 150 runs at the iconic venue in ODI cricket. The earlier best opening partnership at Lord’s was 135 runs, scored by Geoffrey Boycott and Peter Willey against the West Indies in 1980.
It was another long-awaited milestone for England. Before this innings, the hosts had not registered a 100-plus opening partnership in an ODI at Lord’s since 2010, when Andrew Strauss and Steven Davies added 113 runs against Pakistan.
