Mumbai Indians have appointed Kieron Pollard as their head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with the five-time champions confirming the decision on Saturday. Pollard will replace Mahela Jayawardene, bringing an end to the Sri Lankan’s latest stint in charge of the franchise.
Pollard, who has served as Mumbai Indians’ batting coach over the past few seasons, will now take on a bigger leadership role at the franchise where he enjoyed considerable success as a player. His elevation continues a long association with MI, having been part of the team during some of its most successful years.
“Mumbai Indians are pleased to announce the elevation of Kieron Pollard to Head Coach, extending one of the most enduring player-to-coach associations in cricket,” the franchise said in a statement.
The franchise added that Pollard’s appointment reflected its commitment to building on its legacy, developing talent and strengthening the team’s culture while pursuing excellence both on and off the field.
“His leadership will be rooted in the experience of having been part of MI’s most successful years, alongside the ambition to shape the team’s next chapter,” the statement added.
Pollard Moves From Batting Coach To Head Coach
Pollard’s promotion marks another step in his transition from a key player to a member of Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff. After representing the franchise on the field for several seasons, the former West Indies all-rounder moved into coaching and worked closely with the team’s batters.
His familiarity with the franchise’s environment and expectations will be central to his new role as Mumbai Indians prepare for the 2027 campaign.
The appointment also places responsibility on Pollard to oversee the team’s broader preparation and performance, rather than focusing solely on the batting department.

Mahela Jayawardene’s Stint Comes To An End
Pollard takes over following Jayawardene’s exit from the head coach position. Jayawardene has been closely associated with Mumbai Indians in a coaching capacity, having previously led the team during its IPL title-winning campaigns before returning to the role.
Mumbai Indians, five-time IPL champions, will now look to the former West Indies star to guide the franchise into its next chapter. With the 2027 season ahead, Pollard’s appointment signals a new phase for the team as it looks to build on its established legacy.
