Gujarat Titans (GT) openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are close to making IPL history. The pair are just 54 runs away from breaking the record for the most runs scored by a batting partnership in a single IPL season.

The record currently belongs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stars Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who scored 939 runs together in the 2016 season.

Gill and Sudharsan have been the most dependable part of Gujarat Titans’ batting this year. They have given the team steady starts almost every game, mixing caution with controlled aggression at the top of the order.

They added another strong partnership in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals, which was their 11th century stand together in T20 cricket which is the most by any opening pair.

So far this season, the duo has scored 886 runs in 15 innings at an average of 63.28. Their partnership numbers include four century stands and two fifties, showing how consistent they have been throughout the tournament.

Both batters are also among the top run-scorers this season. Gill has made 722 runs at an average of 48.13 and a strike rate above 163, including a century and six fifties. His best score is 104.

Sudharsan has scored 710 runs in 16 innings at an average of 47.33 with a strike rate of 159.55. He has one century and eight fifties, with a highest score of 100.

Back in 2016, Kohli and de Villiers set the benchmark with 939 runs together at an average of 78.25, including five centuries and two half-century stands.

One interesting detail for Gujarat is how often they win when their openers stay together. This season, they have won six out of seven matches when Gill and Sudharsan have batted beyond the fifth over.
