India national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney last week, has expressed his wish to continue leading the team for a short while longer while he also requested that the board begin searching for his replacement.

Rohit has been under severe scanner for his captaincy and batting form after the Border-Gavaskar series loss against Australia. India's miserable performance, which has knocked them out of the World Test Championship, has flared fiery discussions about Rohit's fortune in the red-ball format.

Not only have his captaincy tactics been questioned, but his ability as a front-line batter has also been called into question, initiating further debate about his sustainability within the team setup.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran on Sunday, Rohit has offered his full support to the new captain.

Rohit met BCCI officials in Mumbai during a review meeting, discussing the recent India-Australian tour, last Saturday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Agarkar were present in the meeting as they also assessed team performance and perhaps decided future strategies.

According to reports, during the meeting, 37-year-old Rohit Sharma expressed his wish to continue guiding the team as captain for a few more months.

According to the source, as quoted by Dainik Jagran Rohit said, "I will remain the captain for the next few months, and till then the board can choose the future captain. Whoever you choose will have my full support."

Jasprit Bumrah is one name that has emerged as a long-term successor to Rohit Sharma's captaincy. What probably wrecks it is whether the 29-year-old fast bowler is fit for this post. He is currently number 1 in the ICC Test bowling rankings and had a great series against Australia. Having bagged 32 wickets in 5 tests.

Bumrah's back injury recurrence has raised doubts about his ability to withstand the physical demands of leading the team, casting a shadow over his potential future as captain.

Meanwhile, Rohit will captain India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to commence on February 19. As part of a hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI, ICC, and Pakistan Cricket Board, India's matches will be held in Dubai.
