Rohit Sharma has once again kept everyone guessing about his plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former India captain was asked about his chances of playing in the next World Cup during an event in Mumbai on Thursday.

However, Rohit did not confirm whether he wants to be part of the tournament or whether he sees his international career reaching its end before then. Instead, he gave a short response and left the question open.

Rohit Speaks On World Cup For The First Time

This is the first time Rohit has publicly addressed his World Cup future since reports emerged around India’s ODI series in England in July.

There has been plenty of discussion around the 2027 World Cup and whether Rohit still features in the selectors’ long-term plans. The veteran opener, however, has not publicly committed to either playing in the tournament or stepping away before it.

Rohit is widely understood to be keen on playing in the 2027 World Cup. Winning the ODI World Cup is also seen as one of the few major white-ball achievements still missing from his career.

Rohit Has Worked On His Fitness

Since 2025, Rohit has reportedly put considerable effort into improving his fitness as he continues to play at the highest level.

He has also worked individually with Abhishek Nayar as part of his fitness preparations. That effort has added to the belief that the 2027 World Cup remains an important target for the veteran batter.

However, questions over his place in India’s ODI plans grew before the England series.

Selection Committee Reportedly Had Other Plans

According to reports, a member of the BCCI men’s selection committee had informed Rohit that he was not part of the plans for the 2027 World Cup.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was reportedly being considered as a younger option to take his place in the ODI setup.

Rohit was said to be unhappy with the development and subsequently spoke to a few BCCI officials about the situation.

There were also reports that he was prepared to accept the selectors’ decision and could have considered retirement after the final ODI at Lord’s.

Rohit Also Asked About Bus Parade

During Thursday’s event, Rohit was asked another question related to the 2027 World Cup.

This time, the question was about whether India could have an open-top bus parade in Mumbai if the team wins the tournament, similar to the celebrations after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.

Rohit did not sound particularly convinced about the possibility.

“I do not think a bus parade would be possible now,” he said.

His ODI Future Still Unclear

The situation around Rohit’s ODI future has remained uncertain, with different reports suggesting different possibilities. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, however, had earlier indicated that Rohit was not planning to retire after the Lord’s ODI. Rohit then produced a superb century in that match, although India went on to lose the game.
