India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has spoken about the pressure of performing in T20I cricket, saying players must always be ready as their place in the team is never guaranteed. He also explained that his main responsibility is to give India a good start whenever he gets the chance to bat.
Samson returned to form in the second T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi on Friday, scoring a half-century. However, his knock could not help India win the match as the visitors chased down a target of 250 runs with six wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.
The Indian batter had struggled in his last four outings, raising questions about his place in the playing XI. With young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also waiting for an opportunity, Samson was under pressure to deliver.
Sanju Samson On His Recent Struggles
Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, had failed to make a significant impact in his previous appearances, including the one-off T20I against Japan, the Asian Games and the first T20I against the West Indies.
After his half-century in Ranchi, the broadcasters asked him what had changed in his latest innings compared to his previous four outings.
He added that players can do everything right in terms of preparation, but the outcome of a T20 match is not always in their control.
‘I Don’t Blame Anyone Else’: Samson On His Responsibility
Samson also made it clear that he takes responsibility for his performances and does not blame others when he fails to score runs.
His comments come at a time when competition for places in the Indian team remains intense. With players waiting for opportunities, Samson knows that consistent performances will be important to hold on to his spot.
Sanju Samson’s T20I Record In 2026
Despite his recent struggles, Samson has maintained an impressive record in 2026. He has scored a half-century in every T20I innings this year in which he has faced at least 15 balls.
His latest fifty against the West Indies was another example of his ability to make an impact when he gets going. However, the innings ended on a disappointing note for India as the visitors completed a record chase to level the five-match series 1-1.
