The Indian men's and women's cricket teams could be required to accept their medals from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi if he is asked to present them during the 2026 Asian Games medal ceremony, according to a report by The Times of India.
Both Indian teams are competing for gold in the Asian Games, and the possibility of Naqvi presenting the medals could once again bring the ongoing trophy dispute into focus.
India Yet to Receive Asia Cup Trophies and Medals
India are the reigning champions of the men's and women's Asia Cup, but neither team has received its trophy or medals. The dispute began after Naqvi insisted on presenting the silverware himself, something the Indian teams have not agreed to.
With both teams in contention for gold at the Asian Games, Naqvi could potentially be present at the medal ceremony. However, the final decision on who will present the medals rests with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board and players are currently focused on their matches and will decide how to approach the situation if it arises.
He further stressed that the board does not want to get distracted by an issue that has not yet occurred.
What Do OCA Rules Say About Medal Presentations?
The possibility of Naqvi presenting medals depends on the rules governing the Asian Games. Article 66 of the OCA Constitution and Rules, under the section titled ‘Victory and Medals Ceremony’, states: “Medals to the winners of the OCA Games shall be presented by the OCA President."
The rule also allows the OCA President to delegate the responsibility to other OCA members. However, the ceremony must take place alongside the president or deputy of the relevant international or Asian sports federation.
Article 66 further specifies:
Decision Still Rests With the Olympic Council of Asia
Under the existing rules, the OCA President has the authority to decide who presents the medals. Whether Mohsin Naqvi will be given that responsibility remains uncertain. For now, the Indian cricket teams are concentrating on their performances at the Asian Games. Any decision regarding the medal ceremony is expected to be addressed once the teams reach the podium.
