Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken Indian cricket by storm in a very short time. The 15-year-old has quickly become one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country and has already broken a plethora of records within just two series since making his international debut this year.

The Bihar youngster’s development was discussed during the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) review meeting at its headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. Sooryavanshi, who became the youngest male cricketer to play for India after making his T20I debut against England in July, has now been backed to follow the path of legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board wants Sooryavanshi and other young players to develop into long-term stars for Indian cricket.

Saikia also made it clear that the BCCI is keeping a close watch on Sooryavanshi’s progress. The board does not want to rush the youngster into bigger assignments and plans to give him enough time to develop at his own pace.

“So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He’s monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future,” Saikia said.

The BCCI secretary added that the board is not focusing only on Sooryavanshi. Around 10 to 15 players from his age group are also being closely tracked as part of the board’s long-term plans.

“We are very cautious that every right step he should take forward so that it should not be a one-series or one-year wonder,” Saikia said.

“We are looking at all the players, not only Vaibhav’s relevance, but there are about 10–15 players who are in our targeted group. They are constantly monitored by our COE head, VVS Laxman, who is taking keen interest in their future and their training and skill development.”

Sooryavanshi had a quiet start to his international career in England, scoring 14, 13 and 15 in his three T20I innings. However, he bounced back strongly in the next series in Zimbabwe.

The southpaw was named Player of the Series after India's 3-0 win in Zimbabwe. He then continued his impressive run in Sri Lanka, where he smashed the fastest-ever century in List A cricket during India A’s Tri-Nation series triumph.

His rapid rise has also been reflected in domestic cricket. Sooryavanshi was named East Zone’s vice-captain for the Duleep Trophy at the start of the domestic season.

He also made history during the tournament, scoring a quick half-century in the semi-final against Central Zone to become the youngest player to hit a fifty in Duleep Trophy history.

At just 15, Sooryavanshi is already attracting comparisons with some of India’s greatest young talents. But with the BCCI keen to take a careful approach, the focus now appears to be on giving the teenager enough time to grow before expecting him to take on bigger responsibilities.

Sooryavanshi, who is currently featuring in the Duleep Trophy, will now be seen donning the India jersey in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, which will take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
