Indian batting stalwart Rohit Sharma has started his preparations for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, which begins at home on September 27.

The official Instagram account of Team Ro, Rohit’s media team, shared a short video of the former India captain during a training session. The clip showed Rohit playing his trademark shots with his usual ease.

“Finesse,” read the caption of the post.

Rohit Sharma Keeps 2027 World Cup Hopes Alive

Rohit’s future in ODI cricket has been a major talking point, especially with the veteran batter now 39 and the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching.

Questions about his place in India’s World Cup plans became louder during the England tour. There was speculation before the third ODI at Lord’s that the series decider could be Rohit’s final international appearance for India.

The former captain had already retired from T20Is and Tests, leaving his ODI future as the only question still unanswered.

However, Rohit responded in the best possible way, with his bat.

138 In England Changed The Conversation

Chasing 388 runs in the third ODI at Lord’s, Rohit produced a stunning 138 off just 110 balls. His innings included 17 fours and five sixes and showed that he still had plenty to offer at the highest level.

India eventually lost the match by 27 runs, but Rohit’s knock once again put the spotlight on his ability to perform under pressure.

He finished the three-match ODI series with 175 runs at an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 98.31, including one century.

BCCI Secretary Backs Rohit

The speculation around Rohit’s future continued after the BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia backed the veteran batter and pointed towards his recent performances, particularly the 138-run knock against England.

Saikia also made it clear that he did not want to add to the ongoing speculation about Rohit’s retirement.

“He has been playing superbly in all the matches, so what more do you want? He scored 138 runs in the last match, so why is there any speculation? For now, I don’t want to give any fodder to the speculators,” Saikia told reporters.

Rohit’s ODI Numbers In 2026

Rohit has had a mixed run in ODIs this year, but his overall numbers remain strong.

He has scored 379 runs in nine innings at an average of 42.11 and a strike rate of more than 99. His 2026 ODI campaign includes one century and one fifty, with his highest score being 138.

With the West Indies series now approaching, Rohit will have another opportunity to make his case for a place in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup.
