Delhi Road Accidents: In the financial year 2024-25, Delhi recorded nearly 150 road accidents involving buses, which tragically claimed around 40 lives and sparked renewed debate over safety standards in the city’s public transport system.
Official records show that Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses accounted for 97 of these crashes, including 21 fatal ones, in which both passengers and pedestrians lost their lives or suffered injuries.
Key reasons behind the accidents, apart from routine traffic rule violations, include the absence of dedicated bus lanes, inadequate driver training, instances of over-speeding, and mechanical faults in the vehicles.

Insights from Delhi Government Figures
Data compiled by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Delhi, classified 15 incidents as major accidents, while 61 were placed in the minor category. Every bus involved was a standard 12-metre low-floor model operated by DTC.
Authorities noted that the combination of extreme congestion in busy parts of the city and widespread disregard for lane discipline by surrounding traffic significantly increases the risk for these oversized buses.
Separately, cluster buses operated under the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) were implicated in 50 accidents during the same period. Of these, 40 per cent proved fatal, resulting in 20 deaths. The cluster fleet was also part of 12 major and 18 minor crashes.
