An outbreak of bird flu (H5N1) at the National Zoological Park has put the lives of several birds and wildlife at risk. So far, 12 birds have died, including two Painted Storks on Sunday. The dead include six Painted Storks, two Black-necked Ibises, and four migratory Painted Storks.
Zoo officials confirmed that four birds, three Painted Storks and one Black-necked Ibis, have been isolated for treatment and are under CCTV surveillance. Bird flu has also been officially detected in two Painted Storks and two Ibises.
To contain the spread, the zoo management has stepped up sanitisation of enclosures, ponds, and premises. Staff involved in the work are using PPE kits, and inspections are being conducted twice daily.
“The enclosures and ponds of migratory birds are being thoroughly cleaned and sanitised, while keepers are monitoring the health and behaviour of wildlife through direct supervision and CCTV,” Zoo Director Dr Sanjeet Kumar said in a statement.
The zoo administration confirmed the outbreak on Friday and ordered its closure to visitors from Saturday. Entry for staff is now being permitted only after strict checks.
