Concerned over a recent Supreme Court order affecting construction in Chandni Chowk, trader associations have announced a major meeting on September 30 to discuss next steps. The meeting will be held at the office of the Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association.
On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that stay orders issued by the Delhi High Court and the MCD Tribunal regarding illegal construction in Chandni Chowk will automatically lapse from December 31. This raises the possibility of sealing and demolition of over 750 properties in the historic market area.

A delegation of traders recently met the local Member of Parliament to urge intervention. Speaking after the meeting, Gopal Garg, president of the Cloth Market Chandni Chowk, said that the trader associations have demanded either to be made a party to the Supreme Court case or for the central government to step in. The September 30 meeting aims to build a consensus among all trader associations on a unified course of action.
During the meeting with the MP, traders also raised concerns over the 18 per cent GST on lehengas and sarees priced above Rs 2,500, requesting that these items be included under the 5 per cent GST slab.

The delegation included Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association President Mukesh Sachdeva, General Secretary Shri Bhagwan Bansal, Treasurer Ramesh Garg, and Udyog Vyapar Mandal Chairman Jagmohan Gotewale, among others.
