Following the lifting of the ban on Chhath Puja celebrations on the Yamuna, the Delhi government is working to ensure clean water for devotees. In coordination with the Haryana government, additional water is being released from the Hathni Kund Barrage in Yamunanagar, Haryana, to reduce river pollution and allow devotees to offer arghya to the Sun God in safe conditions.

Chemicals are also being sprayed from 12 boats near Kalindi Kunj to tackle the problem of foam in the river. Delhi Jal Board officials stated that increasing the flow of water, combined with chemical treatment, will help maintain cleanliness in the Yamuna.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him on development work in Delhi and preparations for Chhath Puja. Ghats have been set up at 17 locations along the river for the festival.

According to the Central Water Commission, the flow of water from Hathni Kund Barrage has been gradually increased in recent days. While around 400 cusecs per hour were being released before 20 October, the release rose to 3,000-4,500 cusecs on Monday, 7,000-10,000 cusecs on Tuesday, 9,000 cusecs on Wednesday, and 6,500 cusecs on Thursday. (One cusec is approximately 28.31 litres of water per second.)

Officials said that, along with increased rainfall, these efforts have significantly reduced pollution levels in the river compared to previous years, ensuring a safer and cleaner Yamuna for Chhath Puja celebrations.
