Amid the joy and celebration of Diwali, many people had to visit hospitals for injuries sustained from the festivities. These included injuries to eyes and hands from lighting firecrackers, burns from the flames of diyas (earthen lamps), and electric shocks from decorative fairy lights.
From October 19 until the morning after Diwali, a total of 206 injured people arrived at AIIMS, Safdarjung and Lok Nayak hospitals. Here is a breakdown by hospital:
Safdarjung Hospital: This hospital saw the highest number, with a total of 129 injured people admitted on October 19 and 20.
AIIMS: A total of 60 such patients arrived at AIIMS Delhi since October 19, including a four-month-old newborn. The patients' ages varied: 23 were between 10-20 years old, 27 were between 20-40, and seven were between 40-60. About half were discharged after treatment, but 29 injured people had to be admitted. Of those admitted, 19 were placed in the burns and plastic surgery ward, and 10 were admitted to the ICU. Three of the ICU patients are in serious condition.

Lok Nayak Hospital: On Diwali night, 13 injured people arrived at this hospital. Five were sent home after receiving first aid in the OPD, while the remaining eight were admitted to the burns and plastic surgery department. Four more patients also arrived at the burns OPD in the morning.
