Illegal shanties have once again been established in the Yamuna Khadar (floodplain) in Mayur Vihar, Delhi. This situation exists despite the DDA having demolished the shanties in the Khadar about 10 times this year. Flouting the DDA's action, people have once again built their homes here. 

It is alleged that illegal shanties are being established on government land in collusion with local DDA officials and public representatives. People have established shanties in various places across the Mayur Vihar Yamuna Khadar, including some temporary grocery shops.

The Yamuna Khadar extends over an area of several kilometres. About 8,000 people from UP, Bihar and Bengal, who work in farming and as labourers, are living illegally in the shanties. Shanties are also available for rent here for between Rs 800 and Rs 1,500. Mafia elements have encroached upon the land and have built shanties on it. 

The shanties use solar panels, as there is no electricity here. Along with the shanties, illegal plant nurseries are also operating here. The DDA had conducted a drive between April 22 and 25 in the Yamuna Khadar opposite Mayur Vihar to build the Mayur Nature Park. The illegally established shanties and nurseries here were bulldozed.

In August, the Yamuna Khadar was flooded due to a rise in the Yamuna's water level. Just a few days before this, the administration, in collaboration with the DDA, had removed the shanties. After that, shanties were once again established here. Regarding this matter, DDA officials have said that a drive will be launched to take action against the shanties.
