The Delhi Police arrested a sub-contractor of the Delhi Jal Board, Rajesh Prajapati, after a young biker, Kamal Dhyani (25), died by falling into a huge pit in Janakpuri on the intervening night of February 5 and 6.

According to investigators, Prajapati was allegedly informed about the incident hours earlier, but he failed to act.

This marks the first arrest in the case. On Friday, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma suspended AE, Executive Engineer and JE of the Jal Board, citing negligence.

Meanwhile, the police have also registered an FIR at the Janakpuri police station under the stringent culpable homicide section against the contractor and concerned officials of the Delhi Jal Board.

What happened on intervening night of February 5 and 6?

At around 11:53, Kama dialled his brother and told him that he would come home in 10 minutes.

According to the investigation, a family was passing through the area on the intervening night on Thursday and Friday and noticed that Kamal may have fallen into the pit.

They immediately alerted a security guard deployed at the site and a person living in a tent nearby.

A security guard, who was employed by Prajapati, informed a junior staff member the same night, police said.

The junior staff member then called Prajapati at around 12.22 AM, asking him to reach the spot.

It was this half an hour that the incident had happened. This could have been a crucial window to save Kamal's life.

The officials said Prajapati arrived at the site and saw a motorcycle inside the pit, but failed to check inside or take any further steps.
