The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has drawn up a multi-pronged plan to tackle chronic traffic congestion around the Marghat Hanuman Temple on Ring Road, an area that witnesses heavy pedestrian movement, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Officials said a skywalk will be constructed on Ring Road near the Hanuman temple to separate pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic. If found technically feasible, a foot-over-bridge will also be built on Yamuna Bazar Road to further ease congestion caused by devotees crossing the road.

Traffic jams frequently occur on Ring Road, under the Hanuman Mandir flyover and on Yamuna Bazar Road due to the large number of devotees visiting the temple. On Tuesdays alone, more than two lakh devotees visit the shrine, severely impacting traffic flow across the entire area, including stretches leading to Old Delhi Railway Station and Yamunapar.

Following directions from PWD Minister Pravesh Verma, the department has fast-tracked plans that had remained pending for years. The proposed skywalk, estimated to cost around Rs 4.5 crore, will be located just after the descent from the Hanuman Mandir flyover. It will have four entry and exit points, two on the temple side and two on the Nigambodh Ghat and Ring Road bypass side. Work is expected to begin soon.

In addition, the Chhatta Rail traffic light between Lal Qila and Kashmiri Gate will be made signal-free. Based on a traffic police study, congestion at this junction often spills over to Ring Road. The new plan involves introducing back-to-back U-turns to allow uninterrupted traffic flow from Lal Qila towards Kashmiri Gate and to streamline vehicle movement between Old Delhi Railway Station and the Hanuman temple.

Officials believe that these measures, separating pedestrian traffic, improving junction design and eliminating signal delays, will significantly reduce congestion in one of Old Delhi’s most crowded corridors.
