Commuters in Outer Delhi are set to get relief from persistent traffic congestion on the stretch between Rithala Metro Station and the Supplementary Drain, as work to widen the road and construct covered drains commenced on Saturday. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 9.5 crore, involves the reconstruction of a 600-metre stretch on both sides of the road and is scheduled to be completed within six months.

With the widening work underway, motorists will also be able to use the adjacent culvert and the main bridge over the Supplementary Drain more conveniently, easing traffic flow in the area. The foundation stone for the project was laid by local MP Yogender Chandolia and MLA Kulwant Rana.

For over a decade, residents have faced severe inconvenience due to the unpaved and uneven service roads, which have caused dust pollution, frequent accidents involving two-wheelers, and commuting difficulties, especially during the monsoon season. The absence of streetlights has further aggravated safety concerns after dusk.

MLA Kulwant Rana said the project is being executed under the Public Works Department (PWD) and includes road widening, fully covered drainage on both sides, and installation of streetlights along the entire stretch. He added that the improved road will provide smooth connectivity to UER-2, enhance road safety, and help reduce dust and pollution levels.

Describing the project as a major step towards local development, Rana thanked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, PWD Minister Pravesh Sahib Verma, and MP Yogender Chandolia for their support. PWD officials and several local councillors were present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
