South India Metro Expansion: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has stated that the metro has emerged as the first choice of public transportation for the commuters in the key cities. In a statement, the ministry stated that over 1000 kilometers of metro rail network are currently operational across 25 cities. It further emphasised that several expansion projects are ongoing and are likely to be completed in the next two to three years. However, the ministry also pointed out that the approval of expansion projects depends on the feasibility of proposals, adding that the metro has significantly improved the regional connectivity in several cities.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu stated that over 250 kilometers of rail network are currently under construction in four southern states- Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala. He stated that along with improving the regional connectivity, these projects will also give a boost to the financial activities in these states. The ministry informed that a total of 247.68 kilometers of metro network is currently operational in the southern states.
The ministry stated that over 120 kilometers of metro rail are under construction in Karnataka, the highest among the southern states. It further stated that 119 km of metro network is under development in Tamil Nadu, adding that over 11 kilometers of network are under construction in Kerala. Metro currently operates on 96 kilometers in Karnataka, followed by Telangana on 69 km, Tamil Nadu on 54.10 km, and Kerala on 28.48 km.

Earlier last month, the Tamil Nadu government and centre got engaged in a war of words after the latter declined metro proposals for two cities. The government has clarified that the proposals need to meet required criteria to get approval from the centre.
