The Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation has prepared an ambitious plan to ease the traffic system, under which surface parking will be constructed on the sides of wide main roads that previously had no parking facilities to ease significant traffic jams caused by the lack of adequate parking spaces. This initiative aims to eliminate the haphazard parking of vehicles around main markets, hospitals, and offices. 

Gorakhpur has expanded rapidly, but parking facilities have not developed at the same rate. In major commercial areas such as Bank Road, Betiyahata, the stretch from Padleganj to Firaq Chauraha, Golghar, and Mohaddipur, it is often observed that people park their vehicles haphazardly on the roadside. This reduces the width of the roads and significantly affects traffic during peak hours.

This problem has not only wasted the time of ordinary citizens but has also made the movement of emergency services, such as ambulances and fire brigades, difficult. The corporation administration has been continuously trying to construct multi-level parking in the city, but there are many areas where there is no space for such construction. 

In this situation, the Municipal Corporation has found a practical solution by utilising available empty and wide spaces as surface parking. After the state government recently approved this scheme under the parking regulations, the corporation has initiated the process. 

According to corporation officials, 14 such locations have been identified in various parts of the city where adequate space is available on the roadside to create surface parking. Their construction will not obstruct traffic on the main road. These areas will be marked, and parking fees may also be set to maintain order. The corporation is preparing an action plan for this.

Identified sites for surface parking: 

In front of the Public Works Department office, Carmel Road, in front of the Police Lines, Gita Vatika, Hariom Nagar, PWD Guest House, Mahua Chauraha, near SBI Bank in Mohaddipur, near the boundary wall of AIIMS on Kushinagar Road, between Chhatrasangh Chauraha and Padleganj, near the boundary wall of the Diwani Kacheri (Civil Court), Rajbansi Nursing Home near Padleganj, in front of Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology, between Betiyahata Chauraha and Firaq Chauraha and on the pavement outside BRD Medical College.
