Delhi Weather: Dense fog engulfed Delhi on Wednesday morning, with similar conditions expected on New Year’s Day, January 1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the day, warning of heavy rainfall in six North Indian states amid severe cold. Snowfall is also forecast in the hilly regions, which could further bring down temperatures in the plains.
IMD Rain Alerts
As per IMD, heavy rain will lash Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are on alert for thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds. Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to see scattered rain and thunderstorm activity.
According to the latest weather bulletin, dense to very dense fog accompanied by a severe cold wave is also likely to persist during the late-night and early-morning hours over Punjab, Haryana, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Delhi, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the very poor category on the last day of the year, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 384 at 8 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Pollution levels crossed the 400 mark in several areas in the national capital.

At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, 148 flights were cancelled, while more than 150 others faced delays on Wednesday. The 148 cancelled flights include 78 arrivals and 70 departures. Travel advisories were issued for passengers by airlines including - IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet.
