In a bid to prevent prolonged power outages caused by faults in the power network or grid, the Delhi Energy Department is preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure swift and coordinated action during emergencies.

The decision follows major power disruptions in recent months. In August last year, a fault in a 220 kV grid resulted in a shortfall of nearly 550 megawatts, leading to hours-long power cuts in several areas, including Civil Lines, Rohini, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh and Model Town.

Earlier, in June 2024, a fire at the Power Grid substation in Mandola, Ghaziabad, had disrupted electricity supply across large parts of North-East, East, Central, South and North Delhi.

To address such situations, the Delhi Operation Coordination Committee (OCC) last month decided to constitute an expert committee comprising representatives from various government agencies and power distribution companies. The committee will be tasked with drafting the SOP, which will outline standard response measures to minimise outages and restore supply quickly.

The OCC, which oversees Delhi’s power network, will monitor the implementation of the SOP once it is finalised, officials said.
