In a major overhaul of the city’s road infrastructure policy, the Delhi government has made construction companies responsible for the maintenance of newly built roads for five years. The name of the construction firm and the mobile numbers of concerned officials will be prominently displayed at every construction site to ensure accountability.

Public Works Minister Pravesh Verma announced the decision during a press conference on Thursday, outlining a time-bound action plan for Delhi’s road infrastructure. He said that before any road construction begins, all civic agencies will be asked to submit their two-year project plans. Agencies failing to share this information will not be allowed to dig up roads after six months, and permission for repeated road digging will be denied.

According to the action plan, 450 kilometres of roads will be constructed by March, while a total of 1,150 kilometres of roads will be rebuilt across Delhi by November 2026, marking the largest road reconstruction drive in the city’s history.

At the press conference, Verma displayed a large stack of files related to projects pending during the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s 11-year tenure, calling them evidence of prolonged administrative negligence. He said the documents reflect unfinished works related to garbage disposal, park development and maintenance, footpath repairs, e-waste management, Yamuna cleaning, sewage treatment plant strengthening, mechanical road sweeping, plastic waste management, drain maintenance, and water treatment upgrades.

The minister said that many of these projects should have been completed years ago, adding that failure to execute even half of them has contributed to Delhi’s current challenges, including pollution, waterlogging, and deteriorating infrastructure.

Taking a swipe at the previous government, Verma said Delhi’s environmental and civic problems were not sudden but the result of years of neglect. He reiterated that the current government is committed to strict timelines and accountability, asserting that there would be no further delays in road projects.
