Modi Mill Flyover Extension: In a bid to ease the traffic congestion in South Delhi, the Delhi government has announced the redevelopment of a vital 7.2-kilometre stretch of the Outer Ring Road, stretching from the Modi Mill Flyover to IIT Gate, near Savitri Cinema.
The project, expected to be completed in phases, aims to significantly improve the traffic flow for thousands of commuters who rely on this busy corridor daily. This stretch, one of the busiest in South Delhi, serves as a crucial link between various localities in the capital and neighbouring regions such as Noida, Gurugram, and IGI Airport.
The 7.2-kilometre stretch traverses several densely populated and upscale localities, including Greater Kailash, Malviya Nagar, CR Park, Chirag Delhi, Pamposh Enclave, and Kalkaji. These areas experience consistent traffic jams, with congestion affecting both local commuters and those travelling longer distances.
Currently, more than two lakh vehicles use this stretch daily, leading to long delays and considerable inconvenience, especially during peak hours. The severe traffic gridlock not only frustrates commuters but also hampers the overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network.
The redevelopment plan includes the extension of the existing Modi Mill Flyover, which will be extended towards the Kalkaji Temple Flyover. This extension aims to bypass major bottlenecks and allow for smoother passage through this congested stretch. In addition, two ‘half flyovers’ will be constructed one at the Kalkaji Temple intersection and another at the Savitri Cinema junction. These flyovers are designed to relieve pressure at key junctions, thus ensuring a more balanced distribution of traffic as reported by The Indian Express.
The total cost of the extension and the construction of the flyovers is estimated at Rs 371.75 crore which is expected to provide long-term benefits to both residents and commuters.
Modi Mill Flyover Extension: Who Will Benefit?
The redevelopment will benefit residents and commuters from several prominent South Delhi localities, including Greater Kailash, Chirag Delhi, Hauz Khas, Safdarjung, Kalkaji, and East of Kailash.
Moreover, the improved infrastructure will enhance connectivity to major destinations such as Noida, Faridabad, Badarpur, and Gurugram. The smoother flow of traffic is also expected to cut down travel time to IGI Airport, making it more accessible to residents of South Delhi and adjoining areas.
