Visitors to the Delhi Zoo may soon enjoy an entirely new experience, as the zoo administration considers introducing facilities such as a night safari, an aquarium, and a combined ticket for the zoo and Purana Qila under its comprehensive redevelopment project.

Zoo officials, however, clarified that no final decision has been taken on the night safari. The proposal forms part of the third phase of redevelopment and will depend on the final layout of the second phase and the availability of adequate space. Officials said a night safari would require a large, specially designed area to create a natural and safe environment for animals. If such conditions cannot be ensured, the plan may be modified or dropped.

The layout for the second phase of the project is currently being finalised. Only after this process is complete will it be decided whether facilities like the night safari and aquarium can be accommodated in the third phase.

In the meantime, the administration is also exploring shared parking and common facilities for the Delhi Zoo and Purana Qila. A combo ticket is being planned to allow tourists to visit both attractions with a single ticket, a move officials believe will boost tourism and offer a combined cultural and wildlife experience.

The zoo’s modernisation and beautification project is described as highly ambitious, involving the complete redevelopment of both internal and external areas. The project is being implemented in phases, with the first and second phases currently underway and most of their components already finalised.

Officials said the redevelopment prioritises animal welfare, followed by enhancing visitor experience. Planned upgrades include glass-covered enclosures, underwater viewing galleries, and habitats designed to closely replicate natural environments. Transparent barriers will be installed where feasible to allow visitors closer and safer viewing of wildlife.

According to officials, preparation of the detailed project report is taking time due to the need for multiple approvals and layout finalisation. Once completed, the pace of work is expected to pick up. Financial planning for the project is also currently in progress.
