Indian Railways is soon to launch the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express, which until now has only been available with chair car seating. This new configuration is set to make the train more convenient for long-distance overnight journeys. Since its initial launch in 2019, the Vande Bharat train has been noted for its speed and comfort. The forthcoming sleeper version aims to provide a superb blend of luxury and technology for passengers.

A prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper train's First AC coach was recently presented at the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025 in New Delhi. It has been designed by Kinet Railway Solutions, an Indo-Russian joint venture. The model appears state-of-the-art, attractive, and passenger-friendly.

Before commencing public operations, the RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) will conduct extensive trial runs. Approval will be granted only after all safety and performance standards have been checked.

The train is designed for an operational speed of 160 km/h, with a maximum speed capability of 180 km per h. It will consist of 16 coaches, including First AC, Second AC (2-tier), and Third AC (3-tier) classes, with a total passenger capacity of approximately 1,128.

Key interior features include:

- Premium first-class cabins

- Comfortable seats and sleeper berths

- Space for water bottles

Manufacturing And Contract

This Vande Bharat sleeper train is being manufactured by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited), with design and technical support provided by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Kinet Railway Solutions has been awarded the contract to build 120 such trains, which are being manufactured in Latur, Maharashtra. The total value of this contract is reported to be 6.5 billion dollar (approximately Rs 54,000 crore).

While the final routes have not yet been finalised, reports suggest the train may run between Delhi and Patna, a route with high passenger numbers.
