IIT Guwahati 28th Convocation 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati marked a significant academic milestone on Sunday, conferring degrees on 2,265 students during its 28th Convocation ceremony. The graduating cohort spanned undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, and dual degree scholars who completed their studies at one of the country's premier engineering institutions.

Alongside the degree distribution, the ceremony recognised outstanding academic performers with gold and silver medals, while the institute also used the occasion to spotlight its expanding research initiatives, new academic programmes, and growing international collaborations.

Degree Breakdown Across Programmes

Of the 2,265 degrees awarded, 982 went to undergraduate students, 871 to postgraduate students, and 412 to PhD and dual degree (Master's + PhD) scholars. Within the undergraduate category, 932 students received Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degrees and 50 received Bachelor of Design (BDes) degrees.

On the postgraduate side, the institute conferred 556 MTech, 170 MSc, 60 Master of Design (MDes), 44 MA, 27 MBA, and 14 MS (Research) degrees.

Gold Medals For Top Performers

Four gold medals and 18 silver medals were presented to recognise exceptional academic achievement. Saptarshi Mukherjee, a BTech student in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, received the President of India Gold Medal for the highest cumulative performance index among undergraduates.

Atri Chattopadhyay, from BTech Electronics and Electrical Engineering, won the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for overall academic excellence. Sarthak Kapoor, from BTech Computer Science and Engineering, received the Governor of Assam Gold Medal for undergraduates, while Praneel Bhattacharya of MTech Chemical Engineering was awarded the postgraduate equivalent.

Research Growth And Academic Legacy

The convocation also served as a moment to reflect on the institute's broader journey. IIT Guwahati noted that more than 26,790 students have graduated from the institution over its 32-year history, underscoring its long-standing contribution to India's higher education and research landscape.

Expanding Research Ecosystem

The institute further revealed that it is currently overseeing around 290 research and consultancy projects, with a combined value of nearly Rs 300 crore, reflecting its continued push to strengthen research output and industry collaboration alongside its academic programmes.
